Welcome to Magnificent7!
Yes, we have great films for you this year as well. ”We”, Svetlana and Zoran Popovic,
festival directors, and me as their correspondent, who watches documentaries in Copenhagen
or at festivals around Europe.
We have watched a lot of films, discussed them, always having in mind what might interest
YOU as a magnificent audience that has been wonderfully supportive and faithful during
the years. I hope you will be as happy with the selection as we are.
With welcoming words like these you are expected to say something about tendencies and
selection criteria...
It is not easy and maybe I should refrain myself from doing so as the films are different.
And have been taken because of this diversity and originality. Films with humour and/or
with seriousness. Important films. Films that will stay in your mind. Or maybe I should
just say that we are not the only ones, who like the films, they come from other festivals,
and almost all of them are loaded with prizes.
Anyhow, let me try some thematic considerations:
Music makes the world go around as it is to be seen in ”Nomadak TX”, where Raul de la Fuente
and his txalaparta players let us meet other world citizens with whom they communicate
and create beautifully. Which is also what the son Igor Heitzmann does with his father,
the conductor. In ”Father’s Music” he takes the old man on a moving, but also humourous trip
back in time. And to one more concert!
Human stories: ”The Monastery” is one and ”Worldstar” is another one. They are full of love
and respect from the side of the filmmakers (both of them young women) towards the old men
and their originality. And they are made with a cinematic feeling; let the images speak,
say both Pernille Rose and Natasa von Kopp.
Which is exactly the credo of Audrius Stonys, a world star in short documentary, who brings
us his latest film that intends to confuse us and disturb our sense of order and rationality -
as did so often Stonys personal inspiration Andrey Tarkovski.
A life behind bars... a love life behind bars. Is it possible? It is indeed, as you can see
in the film of Carles Bosch, ”Septembers”, that takes us to prisoners, who fall in love
and look forward to a life outside. They sing out their feelings, it is all very moving
in this strong narrative drama. Music as a helping tool to survive!
Finally a film from Bulgaria, ”The Mosquito Problem”, from a small community, with characters
who are wonderful and with a filmic structure that is second to none. Andrey Paounov was
in Cannes Festival with this film. Now he is in Belgrade.
Enjoy!
